He would only come out at night, and when he did come out, he went to Herot and snatched up 30 men and killed them while they were sleeping. There was no one who was brave enough to fight him until Beowulf came. Beowulfs plans were to wait until night fall for Grendel to come. While his men slept, Beowulf layed only pretending to be asleep, waiting for Grendel to grab him.

Good vs Evil
That night when Grendel came, he snatched up one of Beowulfs men and ripped him apart while Beowulf was right next to him. Next Grendel grabbed Beowulf. Grendel knew that Beowulfs hands were harder than anyones. His first thought was to run away and hide in the marsh where he lived. But Beowulf clutched his wrists, and all Grendel could do was fight for his freedom. Beowulf held tight to his arm, and Grendel twisted in pain until the muscle and bone in his shoulder split. The battle was over, and Beowulf was granted his glory while Grendel escaped.

Beowulfs Fight with Momma
After the battle with Grendel, people of the city told Beowulf of a female monster around the swamp. Beowulf went to the lake and jumped in. When he got to the bottom, Grendels mother clutched at him savagely, but could not hurt him. He took his sword and swung at her to slice her head off, but realized that no weapon could hurt the monster. She had him down on his stomach and had picked up his sword to stab him. The only thing that saved him was his armor. Beowulf then saw a heavy sword, blessed with magic hanging on the wall. He grabbed it and struck at her with all his strength. He caught her in the neck and cut it through, broke bones and all. Beowulf rejoiced, he had won the battle.

Dragon Battle
Beowulf had one more battle to win. This time a dragon that guarded the treasure in the tower of Herot. The dragon blew flames, but Beowulf stood his ground. His men fleed and left him except for Wiglaf. Wiglaf drew his sword and defended his king. After the dragon was defeated, Beowulf told Wiglaf to see the treasure that had been hidden. Not long after Wiglaf returned with some of the treasure, Beowulf died.

QUOTES

"For this, this gold, these jewels, I thank our Father in Heaven, Ruler of the Earth--For all of this, that His grace has given me, allowed me to bring to my people while breath still came to my lips.
